Veterans’ Digital Needs Survey
This project is currently recruiting. Find out more
Digital technology is a huge part of everyday life. From booking a GP appointment to managing benefits, keeping in touch with family, or watching the news; it all happens online. But for many veterans in the UK, getting online isn’t always easy. Some don’t have the right equipment, others struggle with internet access, confidence, or simply knowing where to start. This study seeks to explore the digital needs of the UK veteran community.
Aim
The aim of this project is to understand the digital access, usage patterns, and support needs of UK veterans. Through an open online survey, the project seeks to explore how veterans engage with digital devices and online services, and to identify any barriers they face in doing so, such as lack of access, confidence, or digital literacy. By including both self-reports from veterans and responses from individuals completing the survey on their behalf (e.g. family members or carers), the study also aims to capture the experiences of those who may be digitally excluded. The findings will be used to inform the development of targeted interventions and policy initiatives to improve digital inclusion and ensure that all veterans, regardless of their circumstances, are supported in navigating an increasingly digital society.
Method
This project employs an open, online survey delivered via the Qualtrics platform. The survey is designed to gather insights into the digital needs and experiences of UK veterans. Eligibility criteria include:
- Individuals who have served in the UK Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve)
- Participants must be based in the UK
- The survey may also be completed by someone responding on behalf of a veteran (e.g. family member, carer)
- The survey uses a combination of closed and open-ended questions to capture both quantitative and qualitative data. Topics include access to digital devices, use of online services, barriers to digital engagement, and preferences for digital support. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and the findings will inform efforts to improve digital inclusion and access for the veteran community.
Research questions
- What digital devices and online services do UK veterans use, and how frequently?
- What barriers do veterans face in accessing and using digital technologies?
- What types of support do veterans need to improve their digital confidence and inclusion?
